A collection of images captured during a spring, photography expedition outside of Moab, Utah. Luckily for us, we had some moody weather and beautiful lighting that was the cherry on top of a nice, tasty, desert photo sundae....yum! 

P.S. we didn't actually eat sand nor did we have ice cream on the expedition. 

All images were captured with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a damaged 16-35mm lens... A new lens was purchased after this trip.

The moment I captured this image, I already had a title in my head: "Gateway to Heaven."

According to Led Zeppelin, there is a Stairway to Heaven. Well, I think I found the gateway at the end of those stairs in Arches National park. The lighting and formation of those clouds behind the arch made me think that once you go through the arch, you take a one-way cloud train straight up into the vast unknown... or as Norman Greenbaum would sang, "Goin' up to the spirit in the sky..."

This grizzly bear was known as Ms. Sunshine. Another bear photographed from our trip to Tuxedni Bay up in Alaska a couple years ago. She came within about 30 feet of us as she munched on the vegetation along the coastline. She was a beautiful bear and one of my favorites to photograph. Also, notice all the insects flying around her...There were A LOT of bugs!

Currently, I'm hanging out on Kodiak Island up in Alaska. I just spent a week camping at Hallo Bay in Katmai National Park. Myself and a couple other photography guides were supposed to lead two bear photography tours, but everything changed when the weather attacked. We got a lot of rain, high winds, and cold chills preventing our clients from flying out to meet us. After a few days, we decided to cancel the tours. Afterwards, we tried to escape the wilderness, but Alaska wouldn't let us leave. After seven days, the weather finally allowed for an opening so the float planes can bring us back to civilization. Even though we were fighting the wind and the rain constantly throughout the week, I still managed to get a few shots of the local bears (coming soon).
These photos were taken during another remote, bear photography tour I helped guide a couple years ago at Tuxedni Bay. I figured I would post these as a bit of a teaser until I edit some of my newer content. Both of these images were taken with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a 600 mm prime lens. They were shot during blue hour, after 11 pm. YAY, BEARS!

I don't normally photograph architecture, but when I do, they're old buildings with moody skies. 

Both of these photos were taken in Grand Teton National Park. The first one is a cabin that was part of the movie, "Shane." The second image is one of the barns on Mormon Row (No, it's not THE barn that everyone photographs).

Throughout this month, I'll be photographing in Yellowstone National Park. One of my favorite national parks in the United States. At 2.2 million acers, it is home a thermal features, vast landscapes, numerous wildlife, and one giant volcano hidden beneath the surface. It is truly a magical place to explore. I've been guiding in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem since 2017 and look forward to returning every year. This place always feel special to me. When people travel to Grand Teton National Park, they always go for the iconic shots, *cough* Oxbow Bend *cough,* Which usually is the stereotypical image of the mountains reflecting in the water (yes I got one of those to). But with 310,000 acres, there are a lot of places to explore and photograph in the park, if you're not afraid to venture out into the backcountry. However, if you are worried about bears or getting lost in Wyoming's wilderness, then there are still plenty of different angles to photograph the national park. All the images below were captured while leading photo tours within the park-no backcountry travel required (but totally recommend it!)

A Bull Elk crossing the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park. This image was captured during a Yellowstone photography tour I led on behalf of Backcountry Journeys in the fall. The bull was originally lying down on the other side of the river, then after a while, it got up and crossed the river toward is. I was happy to capture these images as it crossed the river. Beautiful bull! Considering this fellow was all alone during rut, there is a possibility that he was defeated by a stronger bull, loosing his harem of females. So basally, his walk across the river was a walk of shame and defeat. Sorry brother, I wish you luck next time.

Coyotes are beautiful creatures. 

Often times, while exploring Yellowstone National Park, I noticed a lot of people mistake coyotes for wolves. As a result, they become super excited believing they saw a wolf. "I saw this wolf yesterday alongside the road! It was amazing!" 
Then, as the conversation continues, they learn that I work as a guide in Yellowstone. The visitor then begins to second guess themselves and ask if I can see their photo to validate their sighting.
Honestly, I wasn't going to burst their bubble, but if they show me a picture of a coyote, then I can't help but to take a needle and pop it. "Yeah...that's actually a coyote..." 
And so you have it folks...another day on the job as the bubble popper. Crushing dreams one image at a time.

Spring is in the air and it's Easter weekend! A time of new beginnings and BABY ANIMALS! Seriously, who doesn't think of cute little chicks or bunnies when Easter comes to mind?

The images include a black bear cub and her mom, baby beavers, Canada geese, and a newborn baby bison with its umbilical cord still attached! How awesome is that!

As a photography guide for Backcountry Journeys, I've led a variety of trips to multiple places. One of them being remote Alaska. A day before the guests arrived, a beaver plane dropped us off so we can spend the day setting up camp. During the expedition, three groups of photographers joined us on a bear photography adventure. While living in a tent for 10 days, I encountered and saw a variety of wildlife inluding bears, a wolf, sandhill cranes, and eagles. 

During one afternoon at camp, this curious fox trotted by. Lying on the ground with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a 600mm lens, I captured these images of this beautiful animal. I love foxes and this particular one was gorgeous!

Nine-banded Armadillo

When I was a kid, I would get excited seeing an armadillo alongside the road. It was a sight that didn't happen often, and usually only at night. They appeared exotic and elusive. 

Well, as I got older, I began seeing more of these animals in the Missouri Ozarks. A once, rare sighting, has become a common occurrence in Missouri. These two critters were photographed digging in a field during a spring afternoon in Missouri. They are fascinating animals and fun to watch.

Great Horned Owl photographed with a Canon 5D Mark IV and 100-400mm lens. 

During one of my photography expeditions in Yellowstone National Park, I spent an evening driving guests around, hoping to see some amazing critters to photograph. Driving down the road, I saw a flash of white among the shadows of the coniferous trees. I instantly thought "OWL!" We quickly turned around and parked at a pull-out nearby. Lucky for us, the owl stayed for quite a while as we photographed this beautiful raptor. Eventually, it got too dark and we departed ways. It was a remarkable site and wonderful moment to spend with this precious predator. HOOT!

When I first saw this fox, it was just sitting in the grass, checking out its surroundings. I decided to lay down on my stomach to get a couple shots of it. As a result, the red fox got up and trotted right over to me to check me out. Eventually, it got to0 close for my telephoto lens. After we made eye contact and the fox examined me at different angels, the canine simply trotted away. I love it when I have magical encounters with wildlife. Foxes are awesome!

In case you haven't heard, bears have officially waken up in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Usually, the male grizzlies wake up first around mid-March. Then, by April, the females and black bears begin waking up in the area. So it is about time for me to go out and chase some bears. 
All the bears in the pictures below are grizzlies, except for one!

A lone wolf photographed in Yellowstone National Park last spring. 

These canines can often be difficult to photograph in the park because most of the time, they are hundreds of yards away. However, every now and then, you can get lucky with a closer sighting. We watched as the wolf crossed the stream and went into the willows where it chewed on an old carcass. It was super awesome! The crew and I were SO happy we got to see this animal during our last morning in the park, right before the floods came.
